What is CORDURA? Waterproof and durable fabric
Have you ever seen a bag with this logo on it?
This is a fabric brand called CORDURA.
It is not a bag or clothing brand.
CORDURA is a fabric that is highly durable and water-resistant. I would like to introduce you to CORDURA today.
First of all, what is CORDURA?
What is CORDURA?
Cordura® is a highly durable fiber that is seven times stronger than nylon and is a registered trademark of INVISTA. It is a "strong material" used in high-performance clothing, equipment, and workwear. It is now used in a variety of products, from clothing and equipment that require extra durability to everyday wear.
In short, it is a sturdy INVISTA fabric that is seven times stronger than regular nylon. Speaking of sturdy fabric, it is perfect for bags.
It's also durable so it will last a long time and is water resistant so I think it will be very useful.
Invista was a subsidiary of a subsidiary of DuPont, the third largest company in the United States, but has now become an independent company.
It seems a bit complicated.
What is Denier?
Before we begin explaining CORDURA, we must first explain its denier.
Denier is a unit of thread, and it is a unit that indicates how many grams a thread weighs in a length of 9000m.
So 1000 denier is 9000m, or 1000 grams or 1 kg.
500 denier is 9000 meters or 500 grams.
Denier is often displayed as "D", so it would be something like "1000D" or "500D".
Therefore, it can be said that 1000D has a tighter weave than 500D.
That's why 1000D Cordura is tougher than 500D Cordura.
Of course, just because the 1000D (the larger number) is bulky doesn't mean it's great in every way.
Depending on the part it is used in, if lightness and flexibility is required, 500D would be best, but if strength is required, 1000D or more would be best.
Types of CORDURA
Well, there are many different types of Cordura.
Here, we would like to introduce some commonly used Cordura materials.
Cordura 500
Cordura 500 is a fabric made from 500 denier 100% nylon yarn.
Cordura 1000
Cordura 1000 is a fabric made from 1000 denier 100% nylon yarn.
They come in a wide range of colours and also produce camouflage patterns.
I think it's the most commonly used material.
Cordura 1680
Cordura 1680 is a fabric made from 1680 denier 100% nylon yarn.
I used some pretty hard thread. It's hard to sew. (;・∀・)
Fewer colors available.
Also known as ballistic nylon, it is also used in bulletproof vests and military body armor for the U.S. military.
Cordura 610P
Cordura 610P is a fabric made from 610 denier 100% polyester yarn.
I think this is also a fabric that is commonly available, just like the 1000.
It's very easy to sew.
There is also Cordura 305P, which, as you can probably guess, is made with 305 denier thread.
218 Cordura Rip
The fabric is made from 66 nylon Cordura thread.
I remember that it was extremely soft and difficult to handle for me, who specializes in sewing thick bags. (´・ω・`)
This time, I was looking for images of the fabric to use to introduce Cordura to everyone, but I couldn't find anything that really suited me, so I'd like to introduce a site that has sample books.
This is Hide-Aci. ↓
This is a general online store specializing in the sale of canvas fabric, special processing, auxiliary materials, and other materials for the sewing industry . There are many images of Cordura, so you can see a variety of things.
We don't do business with them, but I think it's a great site and very easy to understand.
If you want to know more, check out this video!
It is used in bags of various brands.
CORDURA is used in many different brands of bags.
I think strong fabric is a good idea for users.
BRIEFING
It seems that Briefing's QL series uses 500D Cordura.
I had imagined it to be more bulky, but I guess it varies depending on the series.
Next time I come across one, I'll take a closer look at it.
The Briefing bag is a bit pricey, but it feels like a bag for a grown man, and I like it.
outdoor
I think Cordura was used for most things, not just OUTDOOR backpacks.
I love standard things, but this is so standard that I wonder if it's no good... haha, but it's certainly sturdy.
Kawanishi Kaban Products also makes backpacks out of CORDURA!
For the FELLRAGE series, a brand of Kawanishi Kaban, we have created a business backpack using 1680D Cordura nylon (also known as ballistic nylon).
Aiming for a vintage product 100 years from now
At Kawanishi Bags, we aim to create bags that will be considered vintage 100 years from now.
We are particular about the materials as well as the technology.
The CORDURA 1680D (also known as ballistic nylon) we are introducing this time is a very strong material, and is the same material used in bulletproof vests. It is quite difficult to make a bag out of this material, but I thought that this material would still be around for 100 years! So I used this material!

Thank you for reading to the end m(__)m
CORDURA is not only strong and waterproof, but it is also a fabric that is very easy to work with, even for us who sew it.
The 1680D we use is hard, the blades get worn out quickly, and it's hard to flip it over...
Perhaps this is one of the reasons why it is used in bags from various brands.
Also, the current name of Cordura is this↓
But it used to be like this↓.
When I first started working in the bag industry, the old style piss name labels were still the norm.
Well then. This is Kawanishikaban ( @kawanishikaban ).
