The new banknotes will be issued from Wednesday, July 3, 2024!

The issuance of the new banknotes announced by the Ministry of Finance in April 2019 ( ※1) is fast approaching!

The portraits and designs of the new banknotes will be decided through discussions between the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Japan, and the National Printing Bureau, and will ultimately be decided by the Minister of Finance in accordance with the Bank of Japan Act.

This will be the first change in the banknote design in 20 years since 2004.

Please rest assured that the 10,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 1,000 yen notes currently in circulation will continue to be valid even after the new banknotes are issued.

With the issuance of the new banknotes, the Ministry of Finance has issued the following notice:

"Please be aware of fraudulent activities (such as bank transfer fraud) that claim that "current Bank of Japan notes will no longer be valid." (※2)"

Please be careful of scams involving the new banknotes.

The reason for the change to new banknotes is to prevent counterfeiting!

The main purpose of issuing new banknotes is to prevent counterfeiting.

In recent years, technological innovation has led to increasingly sophisticated counterfeiting of banknotes and coins.

Japanese banknotes incorporate world-class anti-counterfeiting technology, but the decision has been made to issue new banknotes in order to strengthen security measures.

We would like to introduce the newly adopted anti-counterfeiting technology.

In addition to the current "watermark," we have adopted a more elaborate "high-definition watermark pattern." A continuous pattern made up of intricate lines is applied around the portrait, making it more difficult to counterfeit than conventional watermarks.

3D Hologram

The note uses cutting-edge technology to create a striped hologram that rotates the 3D portrait. This is the first time that this technology has been used on a banknote, and is a groundbreaking initiative that highlights Japan's technological prowess.

In addition, by combining cutting-edge technologies such as latent image patterns, pearl ink, micro-text, intaglio printing, identification marks, perforation bar patterns and special luminescent inks , Japanese banknotes have the world's highest level of anti-counterfeiting performance.

The people featured on the new banknotes are Eiichi Shibusawa, Umeko Tsuda, and Shibasaburo Kitasato!

Universal design makes money easy for everyone to use

The new banknotes, which will be issued on July 3, 2024, will have a significantly different design than the banknotes currently in use.

What is particularly eye-catching is the change in font for the numbers.

Some people may find the font, which differs from conventional designs, strange at first glance, but this design incorporates a concept known as "universal design."

Universal design is a design that is designed to be easy for anyone to use, regardless of age or ability.

The new banknotes have been designed so that even the visually impaired can easily read the numbers and tell the denomination just by touching it.

As a currency that anyone can use easily, it will likely remain popular with people for a long time to come.
